Animal-Assisted SFBT Ethical Guidelines (April 2007) 1. No person (client, staff, others) shall be forced to have contact with an animal 2. If a service / facility has a written policy regarding the use of therapy animals within their setting, these will be followed by the animals and people of MLSS 3. No animal will be used in therapy unless it deemed safe and appropriate in it’s temperament and behaviour 4. Animals will be introduced into therapy only with the client’s permission 5. The rights of those who wish no contact with the animal will always be respected 6. The therapist will not leave an animal alone with a client, staff or other non MLSS personnel 7. At all times, the welfare and rights of the animals will be protected, respected and ensured. This includes protection from undue stress, the availability of water, comfort breaks, and exercise as well as freedom from mis-treatment by any client, staff or others. Animal-Assisted Therapists will: 1. Perform duties commensurate with their position and training 2. Abide by the guidelines and ethics of their profession 3. Demonstrate a belief in, and attitude of reverence for all life 4. Maintain the quality of life for animals and people involved as well as show respect for property 5. Be up to date with their information and training on aspects and issues related to Animal-Assisted Therapy as well as SFBT |
