Individual Support / Counselling

A brief, evidence based, confidential counselling service for people regardless of diagnosis or disability
  • Problems learning
  • Problems remembering
  • Problems with social skills
  • Problems holding a job
  • Relationship problems
  • Anyone who wants to change something about their lives

Solution focused support involves understanding what people want to change in their lives and noticing existing strengths and coping skills that will help them reach their preferred future

What Can I Expect?
Vicky can meet you in your own home, or may be able to organise to meet you in an office near to where you live. She will usually talk to you for about 50 minutes.

  • Vicky will want to know your best hopes for working with her, and will be interested to learn about things you like and are good at doing.
  • Together you will plan steps needed to help you move forward.
  • Vicky will ask lots of questions, but will keep checking that you are getting to talk about things that are important to you.
  • Vicky can also talk to other people who are important in your life if you think that would be helpful. Typically, this won't happen without your permission though.

What Else?
Vicky will ask you to complete two short forms to help keep track of progress. Often positive changes happen after the first visit and that may be all you want. If you are not noticing positive changes by at least the 4th meeting, it may be that something different needs to happen.

  • Vicky may ask to video tape your meeting. You do not have to agree to this, but it can help Vicky to be sure she is doing everything possible to help you work towards your preferred future. You can have a copy of the video if you want.
  • With your permission Vicky may show parts of your tape to others, but she will talk to you about this first.

Anything Else?
Sometimes Vicky's dog, Henry, comes along on appointments. Henry is a very good listener and used to meeting people. If you do not want to meet him, you can tell Vicky when you ring to make your appointment.

Confidentiality
Vicky will usually not tell others what you say, unless you tell her that it is ok to do so. Sometimes it is helpful to let other people know what you talk about because then they can help you too.

There are times however when Vicky MUST tell someone what you have talked about. These times would be if you are:
  • Hurting someone else
  • Being hurt
  • Hurting yourself
