Autistic Spectrum Disorder And The Criminal Justice System

Why you need to know about autism:
  • To ensure you get accurate information and have a good understanding of the situation.
  • Affects 120 - 130 in 10,000 and literature suggests this group is over represented in the justice system.
  • Because people with a form of autism called Asperger Syndrome appear highly intelligent and capable, but are not actually able to function well under stress, such as when being interviewed. They could easily make false statements without knowing.
  • Because people with Asperger Syndrome often laugh or behave bizarrely when under pressure, and they can appear guilty without being so.

There are many aspects to autism, including Asperger Syndrome. Time invested in training or consultation could mean the difference between your client receiving the right help or a custodial sentence.
