Autistic spectrum disorders, including classic autism and Asperger Syndrome are estimated to affect about 1 in 110 people in the UK (National Autistic Society, 2004). ASDs are characterised by difficulties in:
  • Understanding verbal and non-verbal language
  • Understanding social rules
  • Being flexible enough to change behaviour to suit different situations
Many people are considered 'odd' and may not receive a diagnosis of autism/Asperger Syndrome or related conditions. Many people, because of their vulnerability, end up in contact with police (as either a perpetrator, victim, or both) and some are wrongly convicted. Others have mental health difficulties but are unable to receivehelpful support because they do not easily fit into a generic mental health or learning disability services.

The good news is that there are things you can do to help people with ASDs!

What Can Participants Expect?
  • A comfortable, safe environment
  • Confidential treatment of shared information
  • Handout material and the opportunity to take notes
  • The saving and frequent use of humour
  • To meet and learn from others in similar situations
  • To leave the workshop with a plan to do at least one thing different
  • Telephone or e-mail follow-up if desired
What Can Consultation Funders Expect?
  • An improvement in staff morale or stress level
  • The introduction of creative responses to difficult behaviours
  • An increase in joint working among team members if this is applicable
  • The attainment of any individual goals set at the beginning of the workshop
  • Participant satisfaction with the workshop

How Does All This Happen Then?
  • The workshop presenters use a combination of information giving about Solution Focused Approaches (a fun lecture / discussion type of thing); watching videos of SF work; possible live role play between presenters; and individual as well as group work among participants.
  • No participant will be asked to do anything with which they are not comfortable. The presenters do all the embarrassing stuff.
